The STAAD.Foundation.Advanced.V8i software is a powerful and comprehensive finite element analysis (FEA) software capable of simulating and analysing linear and nonlinear deformation (including bending, torsion, compression, extension, shear), tension or force-deflection response of mechanical structures as well as the dynamic loading on those structures. The compact interface allows users to take advantage of a wide range of modelling capabilities without getting lost in its numerous menus for each algorithm type - even the novice user should be able to handle most tasks with ease because all relevant information is immediately accessible from a single screen. The software offers advanced calculations including non-linear deflection, thermal effects, pressure vessels, branch connections (elbows, tees), bearings (balls, roller bearings), fixed supports (columns, fixed frame nodes) and thermal expansion. P-Delta effects can be incorporated into models according to the user's needs.Other important features include nonlinear material properties (constitutive model) with implicit stress/strain hardening/softening behavior using any of the following methods: Macro-Mechanics "Carnegie-Melchers", "ISO 3109", "Klöckner" or user developed engineering models. Coupling of material models is also possible. The software also includes alternative methods for nonlinear material models to simplify the behavior including the option to share the same material nonlinear model parameters to different FE models. The dynamic loadcases include impact, fatigue, thermal loads or earthquake cases. Various failure criteria are available in order to check failure limits in various ways including stress, deflection, crack widths or volume change.Furthermore, "Carnegie-Melchers" beam elements can be analysed using one of the following three methods: "Compatibility", "Reduced Integration", or "Integration". The reduced integration method requires less CPU resources while integration method offers increased accuracy in results especially when analysing thick beams. In addition to the above, this software package also provides a wide range of additional analysis capabilities including:Spreadsheets and data management tools for data recording and processing. Available functions include: Spreadsheets for beam element design or linear or nonlinear deflections of structures. Each module has its own tool-libraries with their respective functions, which can be used independently from one another. Thus different modules can be integrated into a single FE model if necessary without losing functionality. In addition to that, the libraries can be extended with custom-made specialised functions by users themselves. This area allows for the simulation of passive behaviour of mechanical elements such as blades, shafts or gears. The module allows for the integration of data obtained during the ABS-model generation either using pre-defined variables or by exporting existing data. The following example demonstrates how to use the "Bending" module in STAAD.Foundation.Advanced V8i software by analysing a beam bending moment (also available in 2D graphics format): After generating the structural model with minimum number of elements, the deflection results are displayed as follows: A similar result can also be obtained with conventional FEA software like ANSYS or finite element analysis software like NASTRAN.
