The film tells the story of the mathematical genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan, born into a poor Brahmin family in Madras (now Chennai), India. Living at a time when India was still under British rule though beginning to gain independence, Ramanujan grew up with little formal education and initially had no prospects of academic success. But his talent for mathematics was so extraordinary that he left his homeland and traveled to Cambridge University in England as a young man to study with the preeminent mathematician of the time, G. H Hardy. His letter asking Hardy's help would start a lifelong collaboration and deep friendship between them—a relationship that both shaped Ramanujan's life and proved pivotal in advancing his work. In addition to the main plot, the film offers a look at Hardy's own journey as a mathematician, his personal life with his wife, and their relationship with Ramanujan. It is an uplifting story of a man who overcame great odds and never stopped learning. The film was later adapted as a live-action mini-series broadcast on BBC Four in 2014.
