This calendar is available in PDF, MS Excel and OpenOffice formats. The Tamil calendar was developed based on the solar cycle or "Surya" followed throughout India. Due to the influence of the lunar cycle or "Chandra" followed in the Tamil region, some months were considered unlucky which led to the development of the Tamil calendar, also known as "Thirukkolur Kal". Tamil Panchangam has 9 sections (or houses) each day starting at sunrise. Each section is ruled by a planet (Gowri). Each section is further divided into smaller sections called “Sal” and further into “Pakku” or “Ari”. Each Pakku is ruled by a deity. Combined with the day of the week, each Pakku gives a prediction about what one can expect to occur during that day. 1. Kanni Ini - Ini means sunrise in Tamil. This section consists of the 1st Pakku which is ruled by Mangalya Gowri, the consort of Surya or Chandrayee and consort or sister of Ganesha. She is known for bringing prosperity and success to her followers including women in particular. 2. Yeri - The section in this Pakku is ruled by Surya (Chandrayee) ie Surya Jupitaradhya. This is the second day of the week. It is considered one of the most important days in the Tamil calendar to do any business related matters. 3. Kanni Pongal - The section in this Pakku is ruled by Chandra (Chandra Jupitaradhya) ie Chandra Jupitaradhya. This is one of the most important days for people to do any personal matters or beginnings at home related matters, starting new businesses, buying a house, etc., 4. cfa1e77820
